Development of Understanding Healthy Waterways
grew out of an idea proposed by the members of North West Waterwatch
Inc., a community group based in North West Tasmania.
The main aims of the group are to encourage communities to
care for catchments and waterways and to raise awareness of
the importance of healthy waterways in schools.
North West Waterwatch Inc. is part of the Australia wide
network of Waterwatch groups and works closely with
like-minded groups in Tasmania. It is a founding member of
the state-wide organisation Waterwatch Tasmania Inc.

Waterwatch is a national community water quality
monitoring initiative that encourages all Australians to
become involved and active in the protection and management
of their waterways and catchments.
Waterwatch has two entwined themes:
1) Participatory learning for sustainability, built around
catchment health and water quality.
2) Community-based monitoring of water quality and aquatic
habitats, providing valid community data of a known quality
to assist natural resource managers in targeting their
investments and monitoring the impacts of investments on
rehabilitation works.

The Cradle Coast NRM Committee was established under the
provisions of the Tasmanian Natural Resource Management Act
2002.
This Act resulted from an agreement between State and
Australian Governments for the regional management of
natural resources throughout Australia.
Funding for the development of the Understanding Healthy
Waterways package was provided by the Committee using
funds allocated to the Cradle Coast Region by the
Australian Government.
